Scientists deposit plasmids at Addgene, and Addgene performs quality control, archives samples and information, and ships plasmids to scientists worldwide. Addgene's goal is to save time for labs and to facilitate scientific research and discovery.

Addgene has wild-type and mutant plasmids for signaling proteins, vectors for RNAi, plasmids from the 2006 Nobel prize winner Andrew Fire for studying C. elegans, and much more.
